Ford Repairs
All vehicles need repairs at one time or another and Fords are no exception. Hoses, gaskets and belts will harden and deteriorate overtime due to temperature fluctuations and age. The clutch, brakes and tires are also normal wear items. Keeping up with these types of repairs will help save you time and money in the long run. Some of the most common repairs our technicians see are:

Spark Plug Issues
Spark plug problems are common in Fords, especially those models equipped with two-valve Triton engines. These Ford engines are spontaneously ejecting spark plugs from the cylinder head, causing damage to the ignition coil and spark plug. Bring your Ford to Pickering’s Auto Service where our ASE certified technicians can install a thread insert into the cylinder head to fix the problem.

The three-valve Triton Ford engines have issues with a high thread spark plug design. The spark plugs can get stuck in the cylinder head and break apart during removal. This is caused by carbon build up on the spark plug seat that hardens. When removing the spark plug, the porcelain can break leaving the tip inside the cylinder head. Our ASE certified technicians use special extraction tools to remove the broken piece. This problem can sometimes be avoided by scheduling your spark plug maintenance earlier than factory recommended intervals—before the carbon has time to accumulate and harden.

Power Transfer Unit (PTU)The Transfer case, also known as the Power Transfer Unit (
PTU), can develop a leak in the output shaft seal, allowing transmission fluid to leak out. Common symptoms of a bad or failing Power Transfer Unit include difficulty shifting gears with a manual or automatic transmission. Your vehicle may also jump in and out of four-wheel drive. If you notice these symptoms or see reddish fluid on the ground beneath your Ford, bring it to Pickering’s Auto Service for a proper diagnosis and repairs.

Variable Valve Timing (VVT)

Solenoids
The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) solenoids give your Ford a smooth idle and better fuel economy.

Common signs of VVT solenoid failure include a rough idle, illuminated check engine light and poor fuel economy. To avoid this problem, make sure the oil is changed regularly using high quality oil and filters.

If you suspect the solenoid needs replacing, schedule an appointment with your Pickerings’ ASE Certified expert technician right away.

Camshaft Phasers/Actuators
The Camshaft phasers/actuators are a vital component of the VVT system, giving you more power when you need it, or enhancing driveability during those long road trips. Cam phasers are common failure items that will cause a ticking or knocking noise in the engine. This can be caused by mechanical failure or due to oil sludge buildup.

Timing Chain Guides
It’s common for the timing chain guides to wear and break in Ford vehicles. Common symptoms if a worn timing chain include a rattling noise on startup, a rough idle or a check engine light. Proper oil viscosity and oil filters are key to avoiding this expensive repair. Bring your Ford to Pickering’s Auto Service for regular oil service and to prevent more serious problems in the future.

Ignition Components

  • Ignition Coils: Misfiring, backfiring or problems starting your Ford can all be signs of ignition coil failure. If you notice any engine performance issues or see a check engine light, bring your Ford to Pickering’s Auto Service for proper diagnosis and repairs.
  • Key/Ignition Switch: If your ignition switch is going bad, you may experience problems starting your engine. Common signs of a bad ignition switch are your Ford engine may start up and immediately stall or it may not start at all. Don’t wait until you are stranded to address this issue. Bring your Ford to a Pickering’s ASE certified technician for an ignition switch replacement.
  • Bad or Failing Starter Motor: Over the years, your starter motor will eventually wear out, impacting your Ford vehicle’s ability to start or even turn over. If your engine won’t turn over, or if you hear the starter activate but the engine doesn’t crank over, it’s most likely a problem with your starter. Bring your Ford to Pickering’s Auto Service as soon as you notice any problems with your ignition components.

Fuel Pump Failure
If the fuel pump goes out while you are driving, the engine will stall without warning, increasing the risk of you being involved in an accident. There is a recall for 2013-2015 models of the Ford Taurus and Ford Flex as this is a common failure item. There are a few warning signs that can indicate a failing fuel pump such as loss of power during acceleration or difficulty starting your engine. Pay attention to these warning signs and bring your Ford to Pickering’s Auto Service to have the fuel pump inspected and replaced right away.
