Extending the Life of Your Vehicle’s Cooling System

Avoid surprise cooling system failures or repairs with regular inspections.
With extreme temperature swings in Colorado, the last thing you want is an unreliable mode of transportation. To extend the life of your vehicle, minimize costly repairs, and keep your ride comfortable, Pickering’s recommends regular maintenance for your engine’s cooling system.
Engine Cooling Service
Pickering’s Auto Services’ ASE Certified expert Technicians are continually trained to help you maintain, repair and service your cooling system components as needed to ensure the reliability and safety of your vehicle. To help protect your engine from overheating, we perform a cooling service that includes pressure flushing your cooling system utilizing cleaners, and refilling it with new antifreeze and conditioners. In the industry, the term coolant and antifreeze are used synonymously.
To ensure that your vehicles’ cooling system is in the best possible working condition, this service may include checking, testing, and inspecting:
- Radiator/reservoir coolant levels
- Radiator for antifreeze leaks or damage
- Belts, hoses, thermostat, cooling fans and water pump
- Testing the cooling system pressure compared to manufacturer specifications
- Testing coolant for acidity, and strength of antifreeze for winter conditions ie. Chemical compound hold up
Importance of Engine Cooling Service
A correctly operating cooling system is necessary to ensure a safe and dependable vehicle. Regular fluid-exchange services may help with:
- Even under normal driving habits, there is the potential for overheating, freezing, and corrosion, so it is important to flush and fill your cooling system to keep your engine running cooler and avoid these complications.
- Eventually, engine-damaging rust, corrosion, and mineral deposits form throughout the cooling system from the breakdown of anticorrosion and lubricating properties in the coolant can take place, causing flow restriction and can result in costly, irreparable engine damage.
Frequency of Engine Cooling Service & Warning Signs
To avoid costly repairs, Pickering’s recommends having your system serviced as needed, based on 30,000 mile service intervals, or as recommended by the manufacturer. To ensure your safety in your vehicle, we recommend you have your cooling systems checked immediately if you are experiencing any of the following:
- Illuminated engine temperature light
- Temperature gauge runs higher than normal
- Leaking coolant on the ground
- Steam emitting from hood or engine compartment
- Smell a sweet smell
- White smoke emitting from tail pipe (blue smoke usually indicates oil)
