Extending The Life Of Your Vehicle's Brake System

Brake Repair Service | Pickering's Auto Service

Avoid surprise brake failures or repairs with regular brake checks.

“Metal-on-metal” means the metal backing plate of the pad is now touching the rotor because the pad material is gone. This contact is the last thing you want from your brakes. To extend the life of your vehicle and minimize costly repairs, Pickering’s recommends regularly inspecting your brake system.

Importance of Brake Service

Correctly operating brakes are necessary to ensure a safe and dependable vehicle. Each time you depress the brake pedal of your vehicle to limit your momentum, it is important that you are confident your vehicle will come to an immediate and complete stop.

  • Even under normal driving habits, heat and friction will inevitably wear down the materials that brake pads, shoes, drums and rotors are made of.
  • Eventually, this wear and tear can lead to complications of the brake’s hydraulic components including calipers, wheel cylinders, and brake hoses.
  • Costly repairs and loss of braking ability can result from worn brake components.
  • Rotors now days are manufactured using recycled metals which helps keep the cost lower, however, it may require replacing the rotors versus machining them.

Frequency of Brake Service & Warning Signs

To avoid costly repairs and replacements, Pickering’s recommends having your brakes checked at least yearly.  To ensure safety in your vehicle, we recommend you have your brakes checked immediately if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Continuous squeaking, squealing, or grinding
  • Illuminated warning lights for brakes or anti-lock braking system (ABS)
  • Vehicle pulling or jerking to one side when braking
  • Need to pump brake pedal for brakes to work
  • Hard, soft, or spongy brake pedal
  • Leaking brake fluid around wheel or engine compartment
